Ensuring children are getting all the right nutrients is something that most parents worry about, particularly during the crucial developmental years.
But what happens when a child's diet is restricted due to fussy eating, or feeding differences related to a medical and/or neurodevelopmental diagnosis?
Navigating the world of nutrition and feeding can become even more complex.
There is no one size fits all here. My holistic approach, my USP, allows us to look at each individual child by analysing diet, habits, personality, routine and sleep, which are all contributing factors.

Why do children with fussy or highly restrictive eating patterns often accept beige foods best?
The answer here is often the fact these foods provide predictability and consistency. For example, bread/crackers/crisps are likely to be the shape, flavour, shapes, colours, texture and taste every single time compared to fruits, vegetables or family foods where there is much more variability.
If you think of a punnet of blueberries, they can be soft or hard, sweet or sour, large or small - it’s much harder to know exactly what you’re getting!
Beige foods are also often a specific texture and/or flavour that children find it easier to manage
For many children, fussy eating results in a reduced variety or quantity of foods consumed, as well as an outright rejection of certain foods, whether familiar or unfamiliar.
Despite the feeling that everyone else's children eat everything put in front of them, parents experiencing these challenges are far from alone.
Research suggests that fussy eating affects as many as 30-60% of children.
Children typically develop a stage of food neophobia around 18-20 months, likely a survival instinct from our evolutionary past when toddlers needed to avoid unfamiliar foods for safety reasons.
In addition, developmental changes including a push for autonomy, e.g. control, and growth changes, e.g. a reduction in the amount of energy children need to grow, can all contribute to feeding changes.
Children who have faced challenges such as reflux, constipation or food allergies early on may be more prone to feeding difficulties.
Reflux may increase when new food types are introduced.
This can also impact sleep and routine. Following a gentle weaning route can help immensely with this and many of my clients have benefited from my support
It’s important to know that children with Autism might show unique differences when it comes to eating.
These can include (but are not limited to) being highly selective about what they eat, struggling with feeding themselves independently, taking longer to finish meals, needing distractions to eat, ritualistic mealtime behaviours, sensory processing challenges and sticking to a very small range of foods they're comfortable with.
Children with food allergies often have feeding differences that can be related to a range of factors including;
Lack of experience with certain foods (due to a diet that needs to be restricted).
long-term highly restricted diets (for medical/allergy reasons).
Negative associations with mealtimes due to stress/anxiety levels around food and possible reactions learnt fear associations around less familiar foods.
Some children are more sensitive to the texture, smell, or taste of foods.
Food is a multi-sensory experience, so if a child
experiences differences in interpretation of one or more sensory factors, this is likely to affect food choices and eating.
